Johnson
Born and grew-up in Los Angeles, California. His career as a drummer
began after his high-school studies. As a studio-musician for record-
TV- and Filmproductions he earns his living. Zam Johnson masters all
styles of percussion, including Rock, Blues, Funk, Gospel, Motown
and Jazz. In the late eighties he began to work with synthesiser.
He composed music for avant-garde films and dance-theatre. Together
with the painter Norton Wisdom he grounded the "SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY
PERFORMANCE ART GROUP" which he toured through USA and Europe. Since
1988 he lives in Berlin and concentrates his efforts as composer.
His musical engagement is suited to theatre, dance, concerts and the
Avantgarde music-scene. Since 1989 as fixed member of tatoeba theatre
danse grotesque as house-composer.
Further he works free-lance as a drummer. As musician he was invited
to perform in Europe since Ulm to Montreux for many festivals. Including
other engagements, he composed the soundtrack to the film "Ju-ni hitoe
or the discover of the soul", with Martin Karl-Wagner which ran in
1994 in the Berlinale. In 1994 he received an invitation and scholarship
from the Goethe Institute in Tokyo to compose the music for "Rabenstein
- The Collector" and to perform it live. In 1995 he founded with the
Japanese Butoh-dancer Yumiko Yoshioka and the sculptor Joachim Manger
the TEN PEN CHII ART FACTORY.
Zam Johnson has composed for over 30 productions theatre-musik, mostly
in connection with the live-realisation.
